This was the first assignment for ID 104, Interior Design II. This class assumes the student has taken Interior Design I, at least one drafting class, and has either completed or is in process of completing coursework in drawing and design.

The scenario for this assignment is a two-unit townhouse still under construction. The family purchasing the home plans to live in the two upper floors, while the small walk-out basement unit, with a separate entrance, will be outfitted as a day care center. We were to begin this project by researching day care codes and regulations for Montgomery County, Maryland and then incorporating them into our final design. The requirements for this project were as follows:

  • A central theme for the center based around a children's book. The color selections and finishes needed to be in keeping with that theme. My choice was Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.
  • The day care center needed to accommodate infants, toddlers and preschoolers full time, and school-aged children for after school care.
  • The facility had to be ADA compliant.
  • A minimum of two elevations and one color rendered perspective.
  • Clearly labeled design boards.

Below are the four design boards I produced for this project. The color rendered elevations and perspective drawing are mounted on the boards. Clicking on the images below will take you to larger interactive versions.
